Cougars Women’s Hockey Nominated for Sports Person of the Year at Rotary Awards
Sault College women's hockey received special recognition at the 2025 Rotary Sports Awards, earning a nomination for Sports Person of the Year.
The nomination reflects the collective success of the program over the past season, including a third straight ACHA Division II National Championship. While the award traditionally honours individual athletic achievements, the Cougars' nomination highlights the team's impact as a whole. "To be nominated for this award two years in a row speaks volumes about what this group has accomplished," said former head coach Brianne Shunock. "It's a proud moment for our program and for Sault College."
The Sports Person of the Year award was won by current NHL head coach and Stanley Cup winner Paul Maurice. The Cougars were named runner-up alongside Brad Jacobs, skip of the Canadian men's curling team, who captured his second Brier title and bronze at the 2025 World Men's Curling Championship. This award is one of the most prestigious honours presented by the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie.
