Cougars Sweep Lukenda Cup!

The Sault College Cougars and the Lake State Lakers faced off in Game 5 of the Lou Lukenda Cup on Wednesday Night at the Northern Community Centre. In a season-long build-up to the final game, both teams looked to prove a point and provided fans with plenty to cheer about. Piper Post would open the scoring in the game, capitalizing from the edge of the crease on a Kyle Finateri feed set up by Dylan Winsor. The Cougars continued pressuring throughout the frame, outshooting the Lakers 13-5, however, Lakers goaltender Sean Piotrowicz was equal to the task keeping the game 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

The Lakers would put a premium on offensive pressure in the second period as they narrowed the gap in shots. Lakers forward Andrew Langford would score unassisted five minutes into the period to notch the game at 1 goal apiece. Lakers forward Justin Smith would add the second goal of the period for the Lakers just past the midway point of the frame, assisted by Kyle Stevens to give LSSU their first lead of the night. The game would stay 2-1 at the second intermission, setting up a dramatic third period.

Ethan Novello would tie the game three minutes into the final period, assisted by Caleb Wood and Jackson Jacques. With the game tied, Cougars leading scorer Ethan Esposito would cash in from the crease after a pass from Caleb Wood, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead with eight minutes left to play. Under two minutes later, Michael Chaffay would add his 10th of the season, assisted by Jake Kovacs and Gabe Zimbaro providing the insurance marker for the Cougars as they would skate to a 4-2 victory, and a 5-game sweep of the inaugural Lou Lukenda Cup. Gavin Disano would record the win for the Cougars, making 22 saves.

The Cougars are back in action on Friday night as they take on Central Michigan in their Senior’s Night game at 7:00 PM at the Northern Community Centre.
